Colorado Owner/Breeders of Racing Arabians

Colorado Owners and Breeders of Racing Arabians (COBRA) is a non-profit organization representing Arabian horse racing in Colorado and New Mexico.  COBRA represents Arabian racing interests in pertinent Legislative issues, and in matters with the Colorado Horse Racing Association and Arapahoe Park management.

COBRA initiates and manages the annual Stakes program, and organizes the Arabian races offered throughout the meet.  We provide information, support and breed representation for trainers and owners during the Arapahoe Park race meet.  For information about obtaining an Owner's License, please visit  the State of Colorado, Division of Racing Events website at http://www.revenue.state.co.us/racing_dir/wrap.asp?incl=formpage.

COBRA publicizes the Colorado race program and activities in national Arabian-focused magazines, as well as in the periodic COBRA newsletter.  COBRA works diligently on behalf of its members and is dedicated to the development and promotion of the Arabian race horse.

In addition, COBRA administers the Colorado Bred Program for Arabian race horses.  This program offers many benefits to its participants, including eligibility for annual cash awards.  Colorado Bred money is paid in addition to any purse money won, often effectively doubling a runner's earnings!  In the most recent three years, Arabians have earned the following amounts from the Owners/Breeders Awards Fund distributed by the Colorado State Division of Racing Events:

2005 = $20,279

2006 = $28,726

2007 = $23,898

For each qualifying horse, COBRA awards 60% to the owner of the runner, 20% to the sire owner, and 20% to the mare owner.  To be eligible as a lifetime Colorado Bred runner, a foal must be born in Colorado and entered into the program with one time nomination fee of $20.00.  If you have questions or are interested in more information about the Colorado Bred Program, or if you would like to enroll or receive a copy of the complete Program guidelines, please contact the Colorado Breed Registrar, Valerie Lynn, by email to cobra4racing@yahoo.com, by phone at (720) 635-8363, or by leaving a message at 1-877-894-1727.

Additionally, the Colorado Arabian Breeders Alliance has been created to preserve the Arabian breed standard, improve the quality of breeding and address the decline in Arabian breeding and purebred registrations, particularly in Colorado.  Awareness, experience and education are key components in the endeavor to promote intelligent, quality breeding decisions.  Since 2006, COBRA has offered a Colorado Breeders Cup race for runners sired by Colorado Breeders Cup-nominated stallions, and plans to offer such a race in 2008.  For more information on the Colorado Breeders Cup, please visit www.coloradobreederscup.com.
