DARLEY STUD BRED, BESSEMER, POSTS HER SIXTH CALIFORNIA WIN OUT OF NINE STARTS
11/1/2007

It wasn't her typical blow out, but Bessemer still managed to win the $16,525 Helen Logan Memorial Distaff For Arabian Fillies and Mares, at 7 1/2 furlongs on October 27 at Los Alamitos. Prior to the Helen Logan, Bessemer had posted five wins from her last nine starts with those efforts featuring winning margins ranging from 4 1/2 to 13 1/2 lengths. Bessemer had her closest winning decision in quite sometime, as she defeated the up and coming Dancers First Luv,  trained by Colorado Race Trainer of the 2007 meet, Jerry Partin, by only half a length.

Yet a win is a win, so the Darley Stud-bred 5-year-old mare was able to improve her record to eight wins in 15 career starts thanks to her victorious journey in the Helen Logan. Joy Scott piloted the Florida-bred for owner/trainer Dean Frey. She earned $8,593 for the win. Dancers First Luv earned $3,470 for running second. Surreal CS, Moulinn Rouge, Rustic and Anvirlik completed the field.

The top four finishers in the September 29, 2007 Directors' Open will meet again in Sunday's November 7th race allowance for Arabians at 7 1/2 furlongs. Le Fromage, Buddy Of Mine, Cool Sand Luke and Hes The Most made up the Superfecta on that night - a race that ended with a terrific duel between Le Fromage and Buddy Of Mine. Those two have quite a rivalry going, as they've finished first and second in their last three encounters.
Le Fromage finished as the winner of the Director's Open by taking advantage of the 7 1/2 furlongs. Buddy Of Mine, meanwhile, has gotten the best of his archrival in their shorter races, with the son of Virgule Al Maury winning the K Cuch Judah at Fresno on October 14 as well as an allowance race here on September 7. Both of those races came at 6 furlongs.

In the K Cuch Judah, Buddy Of Mine was in a great spot early on before taking the lead and holding off the late run of Le Fromage. The latter trailed the leaders and then ran four wide at the quarter pole before finishing with a ton of interest for second place.

Cool Sand Luke ran third in the Director's Open and in the past he's shown the ability to run long distances. He won the Cobra Classic at Arapahoe earlier this year - a race that is contested at 1 1/8th of a mile.

He also figures to show tons of early speed in this race after posting a wire to wire victory here at 6 furlongs.

Hes The Most ran fourth in the Director's Open but he's also finished second in three recent starts. He's hit the board in 11 of 14 starts for Leslie Smith this year. Seven other Arabians will see action in this race.
