July 4th Stakes Races Delaware Park
7/7/2010

Betsy Ross Arabian Filly S. (G3)

article by Stephanie J Corum

Eight 3-year-old fillies went to the post in the July 3 Betsy Ross Filly S. (G3), the first stake race of the season at Delaware Park. The 6-furlong race, worth $20,300, was contested over a fast track on sunny, dry day.

Bill Waldron’s grey filly Sanddpiper broke well and went right to the lead. She was pressed by Sweet Riches, one half of Dianne Waldron’s entry. Betting favorite Tri Silkie Sands, owned by Joe and Betty Gillis, settled into third with the other half of the entry, Richly Kept, right behind her. After a half mile, Sanddpiper was still looking strong, but Sweet Riches was not able to keep pace. As she slowed, Tri Silkie Sands took over second and looked to be the only filly with a chance to catch the leader. However, jockey Ricardo Chiappe kept Sanddpiper focused on the task at hand and she pulled away through the stretch. Tri Silkie Sands attempted to chase her but was second best. Richly Kept, while not able to advance on the top two, was easily the best of the rest. At the wire, Sanddpiper was 6 ½ lengths in front and won the race in a time of 1:21.32. Following the top three were Arabellas Dream, Three Wishhes, Sahiba Fata, Sweet Riches and DC Well Done.

Bill Waldron also bred his Burning Sand filly. She is out of Novelynn (by Patriot Missle), who was a stakes-placed winner of over $45,000. She has also produced the current runner and winner, Secret Service I (by Mr. Full Service). In her brief career, Sanddpiper is now 2 for 2 with earnings of $17,100.

 Liberty Bell Arabian S. (G3)

On Monday, July 5th the weather and racing were both hot and the holiday weekend closed out with the $21,900 Liberty Bell Arabian S. (G3) for 3-year-old colts and geldings. The start of the 6-furlong race was good for all, but Cre Run Enterprises’s Ovour The Top was out the best. He gained a short lead over Dianne Waldron’s Rich Frynchman and the Guy Neivens entry of Venom and VIP. Ovour The Top maintained his ½ length lead through the first half mile and into the stretch, but Gabriel Saez and Rich Frynchman were able to collar the leader from the outside in the upper stretch. Kept under steady pressure, Rich Frynchman was able to win going away by nearly 8 lengths. Ovour The Top, while no match for the winner, was 9 ½ lengths in front of third place finisher VIP who moved up along the inside leaving the turn and passed his tiring stablemate. Venom was fourth followed by Fond Farewell, Most Likley, Dakaking, and Coup. The final time was 1:20.36.

Rich Frynchman’s pedigree reads like royalty. Earlier this year, he was the first winner for freshman sire and Arabian Triple Crown winner TH Richie. He is out of Darley Champion Frynch (by Dormane), who is a daughter of racing Hall of Fame member Fryga. Frynch has another 2007 colt (by Calin du Loup) courtesy of embryo transfer that was sold to Al Asayl Stables. Rich Frenchman now has 2 wins in 3 starts with earnings over $18,000.
